Family Book of the Month Club

September marks the beginning of our
Family Book of the Month Club
Join in the fun!

Chaparral’s Library Technician, Mrs. Shasteen Murphy, has compiled a list of fiction and non-fiction books that are aligned to the Arizona Common Core Standards for kindergarten/first grade, second/third grade, fourth/fifth grade and sixth grades. In the past, the reading curriculum in elementary grades focused mostly on literary text. Now students are expected to read, discuss and respond to a 50/50 balance of informational and fictional texts.

The objective of our Family Book of the Month Club is to encourage parents to read with your child his or her “book-of-the-month.” In this way parents and students will experience together the kind of books that can best prepare our children for college and career success.

Kindergarten/First Grade
My Five Senses by Aliki
Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik

Second/Third Grade
From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons
The Fire Cat by Esther Averill

Fourth/Fifth Grade
Toys!: Amazing Stories Behind Some Great Inventions by Don Wulffson
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

Sixth Grade
The Great Fire by Jim Murphy
Black Ships Before Troy: The Story of the Iliad by Rosemary Sutcliff

Look for a letter like this one on the first Monday of each month with the new book selection.

How to Participate

1) Pick a Book for Your Grade Span!
Will your family read the fiction or the non-fiction book this month or both?

2) Find the Book!
The Chaparral library has one copy of each title, so families will probably need find a copy of the book.
Look in these places:
Public Library
Costco
Target
Barnes & Noble
Amazon Online

3) Read the Book!
Read Aloud: Parent reads to child.
Shared Reading: Parent and child read together.
Silent Reading: Parent and child read the book together, but silently, and then discuss.

4) Record Your Book-of-the-Month!
If you read the fiction and the non-fiction books, ask for a second form to record both books. (Ask in the library.) Parents must sign the Book-of-the-Month record form.

5) Turn in the Record Form!
Turn your form in to the library before the last Friday of the month: September 27.

6) Listen to Morning Announcements
on Friday, September 27, to find out if you are the winner of the raffle for a gift book from the library.

Have Fun Reading with Your Family!
